"This is a message to you we are very sorry for," the band wrote on its Facebook page. "On January 20th, Tuesday afternoon, Edgar Froese suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from the effects of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna. The sadness in our hearts is immensely [sic]. Edgar once said: 'There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address.' Edgar, this is a little comfort to us."
Froese founded Tangerine Dream in 1967 Berlin and was the group's most consistent member through a number of lineup changes over the decades.
The band's early albums were an essential part of Germany's burgeoning "Krautrock" genre in the late '60s and early '70s, whcih included Kraftwerk, Neu! and fellow soundtrack-crafters Popul Vuh. Unlike the extremely propulsive music of some of their peers, Tangerine Dream's electronic music was less about mimicking the rhythms of urban landscapes and more about evoking cosmic, space-y landscapes. Their discography is huge and cannot be described in a small paragraph.
Tangerine Dream has released more than one hundred albums since the group was formed. Their early "Pink Years" albums had a pivotal role in the development of krautrock. Their "Virgin Years" albums helped define what became known as the Berlin School of electronic music. These and later albums were influential in the development of electronic dance music, and also the genre known as new-age music, though the band themselves disliked the term. From the late 1990s into the 2000s, Tangerine Dream has also explored some styles of electronica.
Tangerine Tree was a project from 2002 through 2006 that was dedicated to the collection, preservation and distribution of unreleased concerts and other audio material by the band Tangerine Dream. The creators of the Tangerine Tree project received permission from Tangerine Dream to release the collection on a strict non-profit basis. Several of the Tangerine Tree volumes have been used as the basis for official Tangerine Dream releases. The project collected just under 300 hours of material (291:39:26).
This is a concert of Tangerine Dream that took part in East Berlin, in 1980.
